You may think racism in America is caused by a few bad apples. But this animation shows how it’s a systemic problem. The history of racism in America goes back hundreds of years. In the 17th and 19th centuries, white men needed land so they took it from Indigenous people and then enslaved Black people to work the land. To justify using free labor, the whites in power promoted a myth that Black people were inferior. White Americans now hold 85% of this country’s wealth. Black Americans hold just over 4% and Hispanics hold just over 3%. People of color are statistically more likely to be impoverished, incarcerated, and face discrimination in health care.
